Requesting Public Records


The Union County Sheriff’s Office, in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code, defines records as including the following: any document – paper, electronic (including, but not limited to, email), or other format – that is created or received by, or comes under the jurisdiction of a public office that documents the organization, functions, policies, decisions, procedures, operations, or other activities of the office.  All records of Union County Sheriff’s Office are public unless they are specifically exempt from disclosure under the Ohio Revised Code.  Record requests should be for specific existing records that actually exist, not for information.


A copy of the Union County Sheriff’s Office Public Record Policy is available using the link at the top of this page.  A paper copy can be provided upon request.  It is the policy of the Union County Sheriff’s Office to strictly adhere to the Ohio Public Records Act.  The Union County Sheriff’s Office works diligently to fulfill requests for public records in a timely manner.  Public records requests can be made through the Union County Sheriff’s Office by completing and submitting a Public Records Request Form. The form is available through a link at the top of this page.

The form can also be emailed using this email address: ssanders@unioncountyohio.gov. While the form is not required to obtain public records, it is recommended to help ascertain the exacts records requested.

Costs for Public Records


The Union County Sheriff’s Office, by law, may only charge actual costs for copies of public records.  "Actual costs" means the cost of depleted supplies; records storage, media costs; actual mailing, alternative delivery costs, or other transmitting costs; and any direct equipment operating and maintenance costs, including actual costs paid to private contractors for copying services.  It does not include labor costs for the public employee to respond.  A copy of the Schedule of Fees for the reproduction of public records is available through a link at the top of this page. The Union County Sheriff’s Office may require prepayment for copies and/or for delivery or transmission of requested records.
