Requesting Public Records
The Union County Records Center & Archives, in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code, defines records as including the following: any document – paper, electronic (including, but not limited to, email), or other format – that is created or received by, or comes under the jurisdiction of a public office that documents the organization, functions, policies, decisions, procedures, operations, or other activities of the office. All records of Union County are public unless they are specifically exempt from disclosure under the Ohio Revised Code. Record requests should be for specific existing records that actually exist, not for information.
A copy of the Union County Public Records Policy is available online. A hard copy will be provided upon request. It is the policy of the Union County Records Center & Archives to strictly adhere to the Ohio Public Records Act. The Union County Records Center & Archives works diligently to fulfill requests for public records in a timely manner. Public records requests should be made through the Union County Records Center & Archives by completing and submitting the Public Records Request Form.

Certain records, while stored at the Union County Records Center & Archives, are only available through the originating department and/or office. Those records can only be obtained by first contacting the originating department and/or office for those records and accessing those records through that department and/or office. Please contact that respective department and/or office for the records you are seeking.

Costs for Public Records
The Union County Records Center & Archives, by law, may only charge actual costs for copies of public records. "Actual costs" means the cost of depleted supplies; records storage, media costs; actual mailing, alternative delivery costs, or other transmitting costs; and any direct equipment operating and maintenance costs, including actual costs paid to private contractors for copying services. It does not include labor costs for the public employee to respond. A copy of the Schedule of Fees for the reproduction of public records is available online. The Union County Records Center & Archives may require prepayment for copies and/or for delivery or transmission of requested records.
